The blocking feature on X (formerly Twitter) will be adjusted. Blocked users will still have access to the public posts of the person who blocked them, but they won’t be able to interact with these posts. This was confirmed by Elon Musk, who announced, “The blocking feature will block this account from interacting with public posts, but will not block viewing.”
Current and Future Changes
Currently, when a user is blocked, X displays the message “You have been blocked,” and it restricts access to the blocked user’s posts, replies, media files, follower list, and subscriptions. However, The Verge reports that the platform is planning to lift these restrictions, enabling blocked users to view public posts, as many users are already able to do so by simply switching to another account.
Musk’s Stance and Potential Risks
Elon Musk has openly criticized the blocking feature in the past, suggesting last year that it doesn’t make sense and should be replaced with a limitation on messaging and replying abilities. He has also hinted at possibly banning the blocking option entirely, except for personal messages. Despite this, users from the blacklist will still be restricted from interacting (commenting, liking, etc.), but they’ll have access to posts, raising concerns that it could make it easier for potential stalkers to monitor their targets, notes NIX Solutions.
