US TikTok users have reported signs of censorship and stricter content moderation after the platform was restored under an executive order temporarily extending the ban signed by former President Donald Trump. According to Reuters, these changes include restrictions on live streams, frequent warnings about misinformation, and the removal of posts.
The platform was previously blocked under a law passed by the Biden administration due to national security concerns. Since the ban was lifted, users have noted a decrease in live streams and an increase in content flagged for violating community guidelines—standards that were previously considered acceptable. TikTok, however, has denied any changes to its algorithms or policies, attributing disruptions to temporary instability during the service’s restoration. “We’re working to get the algorithm back on track, but this may temporarily impact the app’s functionality and accessibility,” the company stated.
Reports of Censorship and Flagged Content
Users have also encountered new restrictions, such as shortened search results, misinformation alerts, and prompts to verify sources. Some claim that TikTok is blocking comments with phrases like “Free Palestine” and “Free Luigi” (referring to Luigi Magnone, accused of killing a UnitedHealth executive), even though such terms were previously allowed. TikTok has reiterated its stance that content promoting violence or hate is prohibited.
Prominent creators have felt the impact. Comedian Pat Loller, with 1.3 million followers, said his satirical video about Elon Musk’s controversial gesture was flagged as misinformation, restricting its sharing. Political commentator Danisha Carter, who has 2 million followers, reported that her account was suspended after the platform’s brief downtime. She labeled the action “politically motivated,” stating TikTok declined to provide an explanation.
Community Concerns Persist
Other users have faced penalties for seemingly innocuous behavior, adds NIXSOLUTIONS. Ada “Mila” Ortiz, a data scientist and creator, received warnings for neutral comments and was forced to remove 15 videos supporting Kamala Harris and criticizing Trump. She was also notified that repeat violations could lead to feature restrictions.
Many American users suspect TikTok is intentionally restricting content based on political views or activity. While TikTok maintains that its policies have not changed, the situation remains contentious. We’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available.
