YouTube has stated that it does not serve non-skippable ads lasting minutes or hours to users with ad blockers, despite recent online reports. The company suggests that ad blockers themselves may be responsible for the “uncomfortable viewing experience.”

YouTube’s Official Policy on Ads

Users previously complained about lengthy ads, ranging from several minutes to nearly three hours. However, YouTube communications manager Oluwa Falodun clarified that “YouTube does not serve non-skippable ads that last for several minutes.” According to The Verge, YouTube’s official policy states that non-skippable ads are usually limited to 15 seconds and can extend to 30 or 60 seconds on YouTube TV in some cases. The increased duration does not apply to regular ads.

Reports of Long Ads Persist

Despite YouTube’s statements, Reddit users continue reporting extremely long ads that can be skipped. One user claimed to have seen an hour-long non-skippable ad, while another shared an image showing nearly three-hour-long ads. Notably, the image had an ad blocker enabled, leading to speculation that YouTube might be targeting users who attempt to bypass ads.

YouTube maintains that using ad blockers violates its terms of service. Falodun emphasized that advertising is crucial for content creators and that users with ad blockers receive multiple prompts to allow ads or subscribe to YouTube Premium. In some cases, YouTube may restrict access to videos if these notifications are repeatedly ignored, notes NIXSolutions.

Could Ad Blockers Be the Cause?

According to The Verge, ad blockers might be responsible for the issue. A Reddit user pointed out that their ad blocker not only failed to block ads but also hid the skip button. Refreshing the page was the only way to restore it.
