NIX Solutions: Trump Delays TikTok Ban for 75 Days

Donald Trump’s intervention limited TikTok’s forced inactivity in the United States to a few hours last Sunday. On his first day as the 47th President of the United States, he signed an executive order introducing a 75-day delay on TikTok’s ban.

Executive Order Details

As Reuters notes, the executive order directs the Attorney General not to enforce a law from April last year. This law, set to ban TikTok’s operation in the U.S. from January 19 under its previous ownership by ByteDance, has now been deferred. Trump does not oppose the idea of selling TikTok’s American business to a U.S. company, as proposed by the law, but allows additional time for negotiations and administrative actions, notes NIX Solutions.

The order also instructs the Department of Justice to notify Apple, Google, and Oracle that they can support TikTok’s infrastructure during this period without violating the law. This deferment provides time for the administration to decide on TikTok’s future. Trump, upon signing the order, stated: “Just give me the right to sell it or close it,” emphasizing the need for additional time to finalize the decision.

Future Actions and Possible Outcomes

Trump expressed confidence that the Chinese side would approve the deal but indicated readiness to use tariffs, ranging from 25% to 100%, if negotiations fail. He insists the deal should give the U.S. ownership of at least 50% of TikTok’s shares, allowing appropriate regulatory powers. According to Trump, the resulting joint venture could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
