French prosecutors have launched an investigation into Elon Musk’s social media platform X, accusing the company of deliberately biasing its algorithms to manipulate public opinion. The inquiry was triggered by a statement sent to prosecutors on January 12, alleging that X’s algorithms “distort the work of the automated data processing system.” Cybercrime specialists have already begun a technical analysis of the platform, according to CNBC.
The statement was submitted by Eric Bothorel, a lawmaker from French President Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance party. He expressed concerns that X’s algorithmic bias may provide an advantage to certain political forces. As of now, X has not publicly commented on the investigation. However, since Musk’s acquisition of the platform in 2022, X has faced repeated criticism for insufficient content moderation.
EU Scrutiny and Algorithmic Manipulation Allegations
Simultaneously, the European Union is conducting its own investigation into X for potential violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA), which mandates that social networks curb the spread of harmful content, adds NIX Solutions. In December, the European Commission requested internal documents related to X’s algorithm operations, giving the company until February 15 to comply.
Additionally, X is accused of manipulating its algorithms to amplify far-right content. Musk himself has publicly expressed support for Germany’s right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AfD), which currently holds second place in the polls ahead of the February 23 elections. He even made a surprise virtual appearance at one of the party’s events.
The investigations into X are ongoing, and we’ll keep you updated as more details emerge.
