Social network X has released a comprehensive report on account bans and content removals for the first half of 2024. In response to concerns about toxicity and the challenge of retaining advertisers, this report offers insights into the platform’s moderation practices and safety measures. We’ll keep you updated on further developments.
Significant Increase in Bans and Content Removals
According to the report, the number of banned accounts has more than tripled, reaching nearly 5.3 million compared to 1.6 million in the same period of 2022. Additionally, more than 10.6 million posts were removed or labeled for violating platform rules. Nearly half (4.9 million) of these posts were removed for hate speech violations, with other significant removals involving content with insults and harassment (2.6 million) and violent content (2.2 million).
Since Elon Musk acquired Twitter, the volume of blocked toxic content has risen sharply. For comparison, in the second half of 2021, Twitter reported banning around 1.3 million accounts and flagging 4.3 million posts. Despite X’s recent claim that less than 1% of all posts contain violating content, many advertisers and advocacy groups remain concerned.
Government Requests and Compliance Rates
The report also discloses that X received 18,737 government requests, with most originating from the EU and a disclosure rate of 53%. Additionally, there were 72,703 content removal requests from government agencies, led by Japan (46,648) and Turkey (9,364). X states that it complied with over 70% of these requests, adds NIX Solutions.
The current report is more transparent than the previous brief 383-word publication in April last year, which lacked detailed information. The more revealing data in this report aims to provide a clearer understanding for advertisers and other stakeholders. We’ll keep you updated on any further insights from Social network X.
